Any idea how to make this work for VS Code and .htaccess files?

You can designate your favorite editor in Tools -> Options -> Advanced tab: Text Editor.

You can edit and save any text in the Xshell terminal with your favorite editor. Try right-clicking in the Xshell terminal.
