Terminal - typing is not continous

Hello,

I am facing quite a annoying issue. Its about slow or rather not continuous response of terminal for keyboard input.

For example when I am just connected to local shell (Xshell:\>) everything works perfectly and is fast. Typing, deleting is like in notepad. However when I connect somewhere else, e.g. anywhere (tried ssh and telnet) the shell response is not continuous. When I am typing something really fast I see the result on the screen couple hundreds of ms later.... and when it got to the deleting something it is even worse: I am holding backspace and due to not seeing whats happening on the screen in real time I can not tell when it is enough to hold backspace. So I actually see now I should stop and I have deleted about 8-10 characters more than I wanted.

Too see this problem just type something in local shell,, it is like in notepad.. every single char you can see in real time on the screen. However if you telnet somewhere its not like this anymore. I would say the refresh time is hundreds time slower

Can you help me with this? Thanks

Program Ver. : Xshell 4

Re: Terminal - typing is not continous

What you see on the Xshell terminal is a reply from the remote server. Xshell sends your keyboard input to the remote server and the remote server responds back to Xshell with the received key and other signals as an acknowledgement. This is a normal terminal process. Due to this process, you may experience some delay if the network speed is slow or there is high latency.

Try using the the Echo Mode in Xshell and disable echo in the remote server. To do this, follow the instruction below:

In Xshell:
1. Open the session properties
2. Select the VT Modes in the left menu
3. Enable the Echo Mode (SRM)
4. Click OK to save the change

From remote server:
1. Open a terminal and give 'stty -echo' (without the single quotation mark)

This will disable reply from the remote server and whatever you type will immediately show up on Xshell. However, this may cause some unexpected error since what you see on Xshell may be different from what the remote server thinks you have on the screen.

*To re-enable echo mode in the remote server, use 'stty echo'.

Re: Terminal - typing is not continous

Issue is still present..

When I am using Putty or SecureCRT or ZOC everything is fine and fast, I have the feeling typing is like in notepad. However when I use xshell feeling is the latency is much more higher... should not be like this.. When I receive huge MOTD message from server it is fast but the reaction to my keyboard is slow..

I tried that echo mode but I encountered mismatch what I saw and what actually was on the server.. e.g. I couldnt delete characters what I saw because on the server they werent, but I still saw them in xshell..

My colleague tried this and same problem..

When I connect to some local server on my PC, everything is fine.. so I believe this is the issue of the latency but now I am asking how other Terminal emulator dont have such an issue? Isnt there some sort of masking effect for latency they use?

Could you send us the following information to support@netsarang.com?

1. What is the name and version of the remote server OS?
2. What is the connection method?
3. If you answered 'SSH' for #2, what is the SSH version?
4. Record the problem with the following free video capture tool and send us the footage.

I am having the same issue, very high latency in SSH sessions. Was this ever resolved for the OP?

I see this issue as well. To the point that it makes this rather un-usable
