Problem with UNIX Matlab through SSH

When using an Xmanager SSH connection to machines running either Solaris or Linux, Matlab (mathematical software) fails with the error:

X connection to saba6:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

This only occurs when SSH is being used, and only with Matlab (amoungst the few programs I have tried). For example, I can open emacs, ghostview, or other xterms with impunity over an SSH connection, and Matlab works fine if I connect with rexec.

More confusing, this problem is intermittent. Occasionally Matlab will open once, and then fail the second time with the above error.

What things should I look at as the possible cause of this problem? And why would it affect Matlab specificly?

Re: Problem with UNIX Matlab through SSH

SSH connection can be established through a shell or without a shell. You could configure this SSH option by clicking [Advanced...] button in Xstart program.

Matlab might not work well without appropriate shell environment.

I'm not sure but hope to solve the problem.

Matlab through SSH: Works with different SSH product

Sadly, that suggestion didn't change anything. I also tried launching Matlab directly through Xstart (rather than through an xterm) without any success either.

More importantly, I tried using another SSH application (SecureCRT) to launch Matlab while still using Xmanager as the X server. That combination _did_ work, which seems to suggest the problem is with Xmanager's X11 packet forwarding in SSH.

Is there anything I can do to help track down the problem for you?

Re: Matlab through SSH: ...

Dear Erik,

It seems to be a problem in our SSH module. We will try to fix it in the next version.

If you can give us the following information, that would be a great help. Please look at the [Advanced...] option of SSH protocol.

- Zlib compression (checked or not checked)
- Encryption method (3des, blowfish, or des)
- Protocol version (SSH1 or SSH2: server dependent)

Thank you for your cooperation.

Re: Matlab through SSH: ...

For the makers of Xmanager, anything:

zlib: checked
encryption: 3des
ssh version: 1 (automatic slection0
remote server version: SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.0.2p1

NB: I've tried other combinations of encryption/zlib without success.

Good luck!
