can not connect Xmanager 3.0 on Vista to Fedora 11

I can not get Xmanager to connect to my Linux machine running Fedora 11, using . I am a relative newbie to Lunix & X windows, so I hope my terminology is correct in the following...

Xmanager will not connect using the dynamic sessions, X11 or XDMCP. The best I get is a large window with a mix of black & white pixels opens on my Vista PC, but nothing is within the window and the mouse pointer appears as a large 'X'.

Vista is running on an HP m9340f, a one year old machine. I have disabled the software firewall (McAfee) on my Vista machine. Fedora 11 is running on an Athlon XP 2200 with 512M of memory. I'm guessing that I have the GNOME desktop. I believe my router is a Netgear 834.

I have made the following changes to the following files:

immediately after [xdmcp] add on the next line:
immediately after [security] add on the next line:

add the following M9340F
changed to appear as athlonhost.athlondomain athlonhost

Added the following. Note that I had to make guesses on how to open TCP 6000 to 6010 for Xmanager, etc.:

# Xmanager begin
#if you want to use GNOME/KDE, add the following line.
-A INPUT -p udp --dport 177 -j ACCEPT
# If you have set font server on Xconfig, add the following line.
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 7100 -j ACCEPT
# If you are to connect via xstart, add the following line(s).
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport telnet -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport login -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport exec -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport shell -j ACCEPT
# Xmanager end

# Xmanager part 2 begin - dwm's guess
# open 6000 to 6010 for Xmanager
-A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 6000:6010 -j ACCEPT
# open 16001 for Gnome
-A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 16001 -j ACCEPT
# open 512, 513, 514, 23, & 22 for Xstart
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 23 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 512 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 513 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 514 -j ACCEPT
# Xmanager part 2 end

Added an 'unset' command to clear the DISPLAY environment variable so that .bashrc now appears as:
# .bashrc

# Source global definitions
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
. /etc/bashrc

I'm not sure where the DISPLAY variable is set (I've grep'ed numerous files looking for it), but my system wants to set it to :0.0. The unset comment successfully clears it.

runlevel is 5 in the /etc/inittab file.

I would be delighted to include some log files, but unfortunately I have not been able to locate them on Vista. I have found info on this website for locating log files on other versions of Windows, but not Vista.

Thank you for your time and help. Most appreciated.

Re: can not connect Xmanager 3.0 on Vista to Fedora 11

There seems to be a bug in GDM of Fedora 11 which prevents remote XDMCP connections. It was reported that the gdm-2.26.1-6.fc11 patch may fix the problem.

We are looking into this problem and will keep you updated.
