XDCMP connection failed (udp port 177 unreachable)

In our environment, there are many Sun workstations running Solaris 8. Most of them don't have problems with XManager but a few wouldn't work.

I did snoop on the Solaris workstation and got this message:
Icmp destination unreachable (udp port 177 unreachable) going from Solaris to the PC trying to connect.

Both PC and Solaris workstation are in the same subnet, no router between them. Xmanager log has this entry repeated for the duration of the connection attempts:

Xdmcp Request Address: 192.168.0.105
Xdmcp Connection Address 0: 192.168.0.184
Xdmcp: sent a REQUEST message
Xdmcp: received an ACCEPT message
Xdmcp: sent a MANAGE message.
Xdmcp: Timed out, state 8. Retransmissions: 0
Xdmcp: sent a MANAGE message.
Xdmcp: received a REFUSE message.

Re: XDCMP connection failed (udp port 177 unreachable)

The problem might occur when a DNS entry for 192.168.0.184 is not defined correctly. Please look up the forward and reverse mapping table of the DNS used by the Solaris.

Also, you can try to add your IP address in the /etc/hosts file of the Solaris. This will bypass the incorrect DNS configuration.

If the problem persists, please check the /var/dt/Xerrors file for more information.
