Re: Unable to Login from another Subnet

Copied from Xmanager FAQ # 799:

---
If your PC is located in a different subnet with UNIX machines, making XDMCP connection can be very difficult to setup and also it requires netowrk admin privilage.

However, you can still start CDE or Gnome terminal from a terminal window. Follow the instruction below:

1. Start xterm or dtterm.
2. Type the following command accordingly.

For CDE: /usr/dt/bin/Xsession &
For Gnome: /usr/bin/gnome-session &

This will launch CDE or Gnome.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

First, check if SSH is availble on your server. Then, run the command in the xterm window. Follow the instruction in the following link to open up a xterm window:

/products/xmg_tutorial6.html

Hope this helps.

I have installed ssh in my sever but the default port(22) is not open. So I'm trying to connect to it through port:21 and 23 (These ports are open from my PC to server). In the execution log i'm getting the following error.

Connected to 150.236.*.***:21

Exchanging SSH version...

I'm unable to open an xterm to run the command
/usr/dt/bin/xmanager &

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Unable to Login from another Subnet

When you are located in a different network, it is difficult to use X11 applications unless SSH is used. This is because firewall and gateway block communication between Xmanager and the remote server. Please make sure that SSH server is installed in your server. In case you do not have SSH server, you can find a suitable SSH server at http://www.openssh.org/portable.html.

Port 21 and 23 are used by the following services and those are not for SSH.

Port 21: FTP
Port 23: Telnet

If your problem still persists, please send us the following information:

1. All reply messages in the 'Xrcmd: reply message' dialog box.
2. IP addresses of your PC and the remote host.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
